on love and democracy

What do we think about when we think about love ? Yes, because this is what it is "all" about, isn't it ? Everybody wants to be loved, whether they are ready to admit it or not, and more importantly, whether they on their part are prepared to love in return. People want to matter, and to know that they matter. Literature and poetry and war and peace are predicated on this premise and it would be foolish to ignore it.

Fact is, however, that love is undemocratic. One may not like the idea, but it is a fact and that's all there is to it, one can't escape it. Love is not democratic in the sense that it is a commodity, and as such it is not endless and it is not infinitely available.

This is especially hard for women, both because they are more numerous relative to the number of men (and in some areas like China, India, places of conflict like Afghanistan, Irak, Palestine, the imbalance in the ratio of men to women is already making itself felt) but also because women seem to be conditioned into thinking that if they are not wanted romantically then they are worthless. Think of all those Mills and Boone romances, Sex and the City and other TV series, all those women enrolling in a gym or a language class in the hope that they might meet "the one", or "Mr Right".

No, no question of going into the social, economic and anthropological reasons of marriage as a practical transaction - though that too would be interesting. Miss Brodie simply wants to draw your attention to something that most people take for granted: not everybody will experience love, not everybody will know what it's like to be wanted, needed, cherished for what you are, as you are, warts and all.

The idea that out there there is someone waiting for you, the right person for you, someone to make a life with, is a romantic dream, a material impossibility, sheer wishful thinking and it is what makes publicity, TV, fast food and other forms of drugs too distasteful to mention here work round the clock with no end in sight. It's what drives people's hopes, it's what makes the world go round and when it dies people start losing the will to live and the little courage they thought they had.

It is just not going to happen, not to everyone anyway, and it is not because of you, it is not due to any fault you may think you have: lots of people of no special merit or in fact of no merit at all are - happily or unhappily, it is irrelevant - in a couple or even in a loving relationship and if they are not they have recently been and will soon be again. Others, no matter how good they are or deserving of it, will never get the chance to experience it.

So, what's all this about, then ? Well, next time, when you wax lyrical over how splendid your husband/partner/child/grandchild is, and all the other chit-chat about love and other catastrophes: well, don't. There's nothing special about it, it's just a piece of luck in the cosmic lottery, you didn't have anything to do with it, you were just at the right place at the right time, you might as well thank your lucky star, that's all.
